Workshop PGH - Crochet Instructor Application

Background Info:

More About Tapestry Crochet:

In my application I suggested a workshop on tapestry crochet.

This is an example of a project I designed for my niece, who consulted extensively on every design decision! Her palette inspiration was “pastel rainbow” and hearts, pom poms and tassels were a must.

We chose a color scheme, shopped for yarn and I worked up the pattern. (The diagram I’m sharing here is for the heart with the darker outline.) The hearts were executed in tapestry crochet separately and then joined on to either end of the scarf.

Although tapestry crochet seems like it would be advanced, it relies on very basic crochet skills: single crochet and joining in new yarn. You also need to have a high tolerance for weaving in ends, for there will be many!

Another Tapestry Crochet Project

Although this was not one of my favorite projects — the bulky yarn I used for it was incredibly annoying and on sale for a good reason! — I wanted to include this here because tapestry projects can be literally any motif, and don’t have to be twee or sweet.

More About 3D Crochet (Amigurumi):

In my application I also referenced an amigurumi project I designed to honor my late cat Jack. I suggested a workshop creating 3D crochet and also one about incorporating surface effects such as beads and embroidery. The “Jack” project is an example of all of these. I designed this project as I went so I did not create a pattern.

Amigurumi is another crochet technique that gives a lot of “bang for your skills buck.” The main skills required here are working in the round, and understanding the principles of increasing and decreasing.

In case you’re curious!

I referenced a personal project in my application, another scarf that was my "homage to eggs” :). This was a scrap buster project for me — I again worked modularly, creating squares with different versions of yellow round motifs surrounded by different shades of white. Here she is:
