What you're looking at here is a place for my occasional casual writing.

My relationship with writing is long -- you can see my properly published articles and essays here -- and complicated. There are seasons where I feel very "writer-y" and those that I don't. So expect long pauses in updates, satisfaction certainly not guaranteed.

I Like Round Buds & I Cannot Lie

Or maybe I should say I like round and spiky flower shapes. More accurate, but less funny! (If you are old enough to know the song, that is…)

My backyard is home to a number of dandelions and I love them, especially when they go to seed.

If they were hard to grow they’d be as prized as roses, I think.

I have taken many photos of dandelions over the years, but when I searched my library, I was served up alliums and thistles too. Which makes sense to me.

The concept of a weed is so subjective.

In my camera roll I also found these pleasingly rotund cacti, spotted at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden a few years ago.

It also turns out that my affinity for this type of shape extends to the non-botanical:

And we can’t be surprised that this type of shape also appears with some regularity in my art journals and sketchbooks.

Yes, I am a person who can be made happy by a specific shape.
